About Malaria |
Mosquito Nets |
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are more than 300 million cases of Malaria per year causing 1 million deaths per year, 90% of
which occur in Sub-Sahara Africa. On 29th November 2004 the following quote appeared on Time Magazine. "Dangerous Malaria-caring mosquitoes in Africa
may have a new foe -the next generation. Olyset bed net which is made-of a durable plastic weave impregnated with the insecticide Permethrin and stays potent for five years." Malaria is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the country. Population at risk for malaria is 100% (97% at endemic risk, 3% at epidemic risk).
It is estimated that there are about 6.5 million clinical episodes of malaria in Malawi annually. Children under 5 and pregnant women are the most severely affected by malaria but the contribution of the over 5 population to malaria burden is equally significant.
Malaria accounts for 39% of in-patient admissions, but malaria related
morbidity among in-patients is about 50%. While impairing the economic development through its debilitating effects on families, Olyset Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLlN) currently offer the best opportunity for malaria
control in most endemic countries.
